HMS staff has many new faces
There are a sizeable number of newcomers on the staff at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for the 2021-22 school year, which kicked off on Monday. Among the questions to which the new staff members responded are What do you enjoy about your job in education? and What do you enjoy doing outside of school? Corey Ramsey and Jay Eilers have been profiled elsewhere in the Pioneer.

Lindsey Ramsey- Elementary Literacy Specialist.
Education: Master of Arts in Education (Ashford University), Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with English/Language Arts and Reading endorsements (The Franciscan University of the Prairies).
Hometown: Clinton.
Family: Husband- Corey Ramsey, Two daughters- Ainsley (7) and Teagan (4), and three adult stepchildren.
Previous places of employment: Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, Ashford University, Ellsworth Community College, and Clinton Community School District.
I’m looking forward to being part of the team that supports students at HMS elementary. Literacy is such a foundational skill that will impact students for their entire life. I am excited to play a role in helping students at HMS develop those skills so they can succeed in school and beyond.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family and walking our dog Mickey. I also enjoy camping, cooking, traveling, photography, attending sporting events, and working out.
Tayla Coady- 2nd grade teacher.
Education: I graduated in 2015 from South O’Brien and then attended the University of
Iowa where I earned my BA in Elementary Education and a reading endorsement.
Hometown: Primghar.
Family: Fiance, Wyatt, and 2 dogs, Motzy and Taz.
Previous places of employment: Taught 3rd grade at CCE.
I enjoy getting to build relationships with students throughout the school and I love a good interactive math lesson!
In my free time, my fiance and I love to go kayaking or play with the dogs. We also are remodeling a house, so that’s been a big project!
Ms. Grace Paulson- Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics.
Education: Briar Cliff University – Bachelor of Science in Chemistry & Bachelor of Arts in Education.
Hometown: Hancock.
Family: Mom (Pam), Dad (Jim), Brother (Jack), and Sister (Nora).
Previous places of employment: Student taught at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School.
I enjoy seeing the moment when a student understands something he or she has been struggling with and helping students learn the skills they will need after high school.
Outside of school I enjoy reading, painting, and camping.
Carley Seivert- MS and HS Family and Consumer Sciences (first teaching position).
Education: Wayne State College: Wayne, NE
Hometown: Sibley.
Family: Father, Brian, works for City of Sibley. Mother, Barb, works at Maintainer. Brother, Jacob, works for Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in West Des Moines. Sister, Leah, works in Tea, SD as a first grade teacher.
I am excited about building relationships with the students, staff, and community of HMS. I enjoy seeing my students excited about what they are learning and seeing them progress throughout the year.
Outside of school I enjoy baking, being outside, crafting, and spending time with my loved ones.
Nicole Lewis- TK-6 General Music Teacher
Education: B.M.E. – Morningside College 2014, Masters in Curriculum and Instruction- Wayne State College- 2018.
Hometown: Alexandria, SD.
Family: Husband – Michael, Daughter – Sophie.
Previous places of employment: Sioux City CSD – TK-5 General Music Teacher, George-Little Rock – 5-12 Band Director.
I love that every day I have the opportunity to come to work and make music with some of the best students! Seeing the enjoyment that music brings them is such a satisfying expenence.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with family, reading, traveling, and walks.
Kyle Johnson- High School Mathematics Teacher.
Education: Earned bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Secondary Education and is certified to teach 5-12 Mathematics.
Hometown: Cherokee.
Family: I have two loving parents, Bruce and Leah, an older brother Nathan and a sister-in-law Tali.
Previous places of employment: This is my first job outside of college but I have worked summers at Hidden Acres Christian Center as a part of their counseling and leadership staff.
I enjoy the ability to use a subject that I enjoy to help me connect with students.
Outside of school? I am very competitive, if there is a winner or loser I am probably interested in the outcome. I love sports (Go Chiefs, Royals, and Cavaliers), I enjoy disc golfing, and I enjoy music.
Margeaux Baskin- High School Life Science 9-12.
Education: Bachelor’s degree at Texas Tech; majored in Multidisciplinary Sciences and currently working towards masters at Texas A&M Commerce – Masters in Science with an emphasis in Higher Education Life Science.
Hometown: Bedford, TX.
Family: Clivia Baskin – Mother, Tai Baskin – Brother, Carter Gerdeman – Fiance.
Previous places of employment: HEB ISD – 7th Grade PAP Life Science Teacher & 7-8 Gymnastics Coach.
Hands down the best part of my job are the students. I absolutely love being able to teach them about the awesome aspects of science but also helping them reach/work towards their personal and life goals.
Outside of school I love reading, walking my dogs, being outdoors and date nights with my fiance.
Morgan Hoaglund- 7th and 8th grade English/Language Arts.
Education: I graduated from Wayne State College in 2016 with a Bachelor’s in Secondary English Education.
Hometown: Alton, graduated high school from MOC-Floyd Valley.
Family: My husband, Naet, and I live in Hartley with our Goldendoodle, Quincy.
Previous places of employment: I taught for five years in Spirit Lake teaching 10th grade English.
I love the relationships that I form with my students and getting to be a part of their daily lives. I have such a passion for all things Language Arts, and I love sharing that passion with my kids, too!
In my free time outside of school, I love spending time outdoors, reading, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, spending time with my friends and family, and going for walks with Naet and Quincy!
Courtney Johannsen- Kindergarten Teacher.
Education: Graduated from South Dakota State University in May of 2021.
Hometown: Sutherland.
Family: I got married at the end of July 2021 to Branden Johannsen. We welcomed a puppy, Nella, this Summer as well!
Previous places of employment: This is my first-year teaching. I have student taught in a kindergarten classroom and a 3&4 year-old room.
I enjoy the upbeat atmosphere that kids bring every day! It is also love all the things students teach me while I’m teaching.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with family and friends and being outside.
Lauren Waltz- 3rd Grade.
Education: Sioux Center High School -Northwestern College.
Hometown: Sioux Center.
Family: Husband – Aric; Sons – Mason (2-1/2), Bowen (18 months); Dog – Cooper.
Previous places of employment: Harris-Lake Park – 1st Grade – 1 year; Carondelet Leadership Academy – 3rd grade – 4 years; Gateway Science Academy – 4th grade ELA – 1 year.
My favorite part about being in education is getting to work alongside students and see
them grow in all areas of their lives. I love interacting with kids and getting to know them. I really enjoy collaborating with other teachers and exchanging ideas to help our
students!
Outside of school I enjoy cooking and baking, going for walks/bike rides with my kids, watch Netflix.
Jon Rozeboom- 5th-8th grade literacy specialist.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University. Major: Secondary
Education, Social Sciences.
Hometown: Sheldon.
Family: One brother and two sisters. Not married, but in a committed relationship.
Previous places of employment: Sheldon Pizza Ranch (Supervisor), Sheldon Community Schools (Substitute Teacher), and Ziegler CAT in Sheldon (Parts warehouse/summer help).
I enjoy seeing students make connections while teaching. These “lightbulb moments” make my job worthwhile and keep things interesting. I also enjoy helping struggling students. My favorite part of my job is the positive relationships I build with students.
Outside of school I have a lot of hobbies. I enjoy cooking and grilling, and also spend a lot of time outdoors. My favorite outdoor hobbies are hunting pheasant and fishing. I also enjoy reading novels, but struggle to find time to read for relaxation. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my family.
Abby Dulin- High School Spanish Teacher (her first teaching position).
Education: Morningside College.
Hometown: Okoboji.
Family: Steve & Misty Dulin.
I genuinely love the look on students’ faces when they finally click and can understand what I am saying and give a response in Spanish as well.
Outside of school I enjoy playing golf, cooking, and binge watching TV shows with my dog Max.
Katie Henderson- 5-6 Grade Social Studies.
Education: BA Secondary Education/ History Northwestern, Orange City.
Hometown: Independence.
Family: Daughter Evelyn, Son Tony.
Previous places of employment: Manager of Sheldon Golf Course.
I enjoy the kids! I love spending time around kids. They bring so much energy.
Outside of school I enjoy reading, spending time with my family, visiting my parents in Lake of the Ozarks, and shopping.
Brittany Johnson- Art Teacher
Education: Wayne State College class of 2015.
Hometown: Jackson, NE.
Family: husband – Drew, fur baby- Nina.
Previous places of employment: Winnebago Public School, West Community School District.
I enjoy student-teacher interaction. I enjoy helping students understand content. The feeling you get when your students have mastered something is like no other. I also like to learn from them as well.
Outside of school I enjoy listening to functional medicine podcasts, gardening, creating art, traveling, and surfing.
Jacob Riedemann- 7th and 8th Grade Math
Education: Bachelor’s in Secondary Mathematics Education (6-12) from Wayne State College in Wayne, NE.
Hometown: Le Mars.
Family: Steve and Kerri Riedemann (Mom and Dad); brothers Aric, Dustin and Jared.
Previous places of employment: 1st year teacher. Worked in restaurant business in Le Mars all through high school and college.
The best thing about being a teacher is being able to work with students and watch them grow academically and personally as well. Being a part of a crucial time in their lives and building the relationships with the students that transcends the classrooms.
Outside of school I enjoy Disc golfing, spending time with family and friends, watching any kind of sports, and cheering on the Cyclones on Saturdays.
