Hinton brought a 7-1 record into its match with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn September 14 at Hartley. The Blackhawks’ play lived up to that mark as they finished off HMS in three games, 25-8, 25-6 and 25-9. With the loss, the host Hawks fell to 0-4 in War Eagle Conference play and 0-8 overall.
“In the War Eagle Conference the competition is solid every night,” reiterated HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. She then turned her attention to her own team. “Something we need to focus on is what we can control as a team,” said Kroese. “If we work hard as a team and strive to improve our mindset where one mistake does not affect our next play, we will see definite improvements in our overall game.”
Once again, the Hawks had difficulty generating offense, finishing with a total of only eight kills. “One of the areas we have been struggling on is serve receive,” noted Kroese. “We will continue to work to control getting the ball to our setters, therefore giving our offense the chance to increase production. This group of young ladies is a great bunch to work with. I’m confident they will continue to work hard to improve each night on the court.”
Jasmine Lux finished with three kills and Abby Douma two. Kaley Pearson led with four assists. Pearson also made five digs, but the leader in that category was Elise Haack with 10. Lux and Pearson each recorded one solo block. HMS was successful on 22 of its 24 serves, including three ace serves. Pearson was 7-of-7 serving and Lux was 6-of-7 with two of the aces.
