As soybean harvest nears completion, rainfall tells the yield story
Farmers have been busy in the fields the last two weeks and the soybean harvest is nearly finished. Joel DeJong, ISU Extension and Outreach Field Agronomist, has been monitoring the progress of the harvest and he says reports from our area tell him that soybean yields are better than expected. “The range is quite wide,” noted DeJong. “I hear areas near Melvin that missed more of the rainfalls are in the 50’s for yield. Areas with rainfall could be up to 20 bushels or so more.” DeJong expects farmers to be turning their attention to the corn crop late this week. “Moistures of the corn seem to be around 20% or a little less, so I expect that harvest to become more active as soybeans are completed,” said DeJong.
