Welcome to the Van Tol home
By Lindy Buren
I have driven past 602 East Third Street craning my neck so many times I am sure Lee and Susie thought I was a stalker! Their home is lovely but I always had my eye on the garden shed! Yes, they are right to assume I have been spying. I asked to interview them about the flowers but admired the shed and wanted to know more about it.
The structure is 24 by 24 feet and divided into two rooms, one is heated. Not only for gardening supplies and storage but used for a shop too. Under the veranda roof are chairs that have been many different colors over the years. Many evenings are enjoyed with the neighbors for a good visit! You just can’t miss purple and orange chairs!
Finally after the tour with Susie I got to see the inside. Lee is very proud of the picnic tables he made for the grandchildren. He makes birdhouses too and I was surprised and honored when he presented me one.
Susie is such a sweet hostess and clearly enjoys her plants and shrubs. There is also an arbor with 24 geraniums and carts made from wheelchair bases for pots! I was told Lee waters the back and Susie the front. The porch is stunning with hanging pots and more chairs to welcome visitors. A large old dinner bell that belonged to Lee’s folks anchors the corner.
The driveway is flanked with a large engraved stone, tall grasses and flowers. That, dear readers, is an indication of beauty to come.
Flowers, bushes, flag pole and birdbath add to the yard. I will attempt to name the flowers and bushes.
Here is a partial list: coral bells and clematis, four o’clocks, begonias, coleus and sedum. Tiger lilies, purple, lavender and yellow day lilies, petunias, moss roses, impatiens and cosmos, marigolds and the purple mystery plant.
I love the hostas, and many bushes which are aborvitae, spirea, Barberry and Russian sage. Of course there are bird houses and feeders adorning the yard too.
If that isn’t enough there is a vegetable garden!
Thank you to Lee and Susie for the friendly hospitality…and oh don’t forget! There are chairs available for a visit!
