Okoboji/HMS finished fourth out of nine teams at the Clear Lake Invitational held January 8 at Clear Lake. The Pioneers totaled 142 points. The winning team was Emmetsburg with a 220 point total.
Okoboji/HMS did not produce a weight class champion but Dylan Jones placed second at 120 pounds as did HMS wrestler Nick Bronstad at 285. Two wins by fall got Bronstad into the 1st Place Match where he was pinned by Chet Buss of North Butler-Clarksville in 3:40.
Another HMS wrestler, James Gellerman, finished fourth. He recorded a pin in his quarterfinal but lost his semifinal by a 5-2 decision. A consolation win by fall moved Gellerman into the 3rd Place Match and a loss by fall in 5:06 to Clear Lake’s Kaleb Hambly.
HMS grappler Ethan Wiersma wound up sixth at 195 pounds. After losing his quarterfinal match by pin, he received a bye into the consolation semis. There Wiersma was again the victim of a pin. The 5th Place Match was another loss by fall for Wiersma with the pin going to Forest City’s Christian Anderson in 5:08.
Pioneer wrestlers who won their 3rd Place Matches were Tyce Hanson at 113 pounds, Noah Strantz at 152, Jesse Bockman at 170 and Sam Pas at 220.
