Hawk girls succumb to late Trinity Christian rally
A fourth-quarter collapse did in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its game with Trinity Christian. The Hawks led by nine entering the final frame but could manage only two points over those final eight minutes. The Tigers took advantage, rallying for a 36-34 War Eagle Conference win February 4 at Hull. The loss dropped HMS to 0-9 in the conference and 5-15 overall.
The Hawks hurt their cause with a 3-of-14 effort at the foul line. From the field they were 15-of-46 (33 percent) but just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. Trinity shot 27 percent (12-of-44) including 3-of-13 from long range. The Tigers converted half of their 18 free throw attempts.
Emily Mutombo led HMS in scoring with 12 points. She was followed closely by Jasmine Lux with 11. Lydia Harders added six points, Frankie Mohni three and Gracie Knobloch two. Emily Otto recorded an assist. Anna Postma topped the Tigers with 13 points.
Working the boards for the Hawks were Harders with eight rebounds, Otto with six and Mutombo and Lux with four each. Elise Haack and Mutombo each made three steals with Lux and Otto notching two thefts apiece. Trinity turned the ball over 21 times. HMS committed 17 turnovers.
