Hawks’ third quarter lull opens the door for Sibley-Ocheyedan girls
One bad quarter spoiled Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s bid to upset Sibley-Ocheyedan. The Generals, ranked fifth in Class 2A, outscored HMS by 14 points in the third quarter in a game they ultimately won by 11 points, 55-45.
The Hawks carried a 26-23 lead into halftime. “We handled their press pretty well,” noted HMS head coach Lester Tessum. “Our defense was working really hard. We played with a lot of effort and were playing together.” He also pointed out their third quarter shortcomings. “We came out after halftime a little bit flat,” admitted Tessum. “We were not careful with our passes. We were throwing the ball away and not having a chance to play defense.” The result was a 20-point quarter for the visitors.
Silbey-Ocheyedan went 21-of-48 from the field (44 percent), including 9-for-22 from three-point range. The Hawks shot 31 percent (15-of-48) and hit three of eight attempts from distance. At the free throw line HMS was 12-of-20 and the Generals 4-of-6.
Kylee Schiphoff led the Hawks with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Jasmine Lux added nine points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. HMS got five points apiece from Elise Haack, Gracie Knobloch, Lydia Harders and Emily Mutombo. Rounding out the scoring was Emily Otto with two points. The Generals were paced by Madison Brouwer’s 21 points.
Harders and Otto each grabbed three rebounds. Knobloch came away with three steals while Lux and Harders each swiped the ball twice. Sibley-Ocheyedan finished with 16 turnovers and the Hawks 19.
