Retiring Library Board Members Honored

.
Sanborn Public Library hosted an Appreciation Coffee Open House March 31 for retiring library board members Esther DeBoer and Joan Klein. The public enjoyed refreshments while visiting with the retirees and thanking them for their years of service.
Esther has served on the board for 22 years. She took over the term of her late husband, Charles DeBoer, when he passed from this life. “The board is a joy to work with,” said Esther. “The library personnel throughout the years have been a pleasure to work with.” The improvement of the facilities is also something from which she took pleasure. “Seeing the new library building being planned, built and used by the community is very rewarding,” said Esther.
For Joan, it’s been 18 years of service on the board. “I’ve met many people and I’ve also enjoyed working with the librarians and the board,” said Joan. “Learning many new things about libraries has also been a joy.”
Esther cites the new building as the biggest change during her time with the board. “When I came on the board we were in the old Carnegie building with steps to get in, the children’s library in the basement, poor lighting and many furnace problems,” she recalled. “Now we have a wonderful, modern, convenient facility.” Esther also has seen the development of many new projects such as puzzles to check out, large print books, great children’s programs and a book club for adults, just to name a few.
In looking back over the time she has served on the board, Joan says a notable change has been the advent of E-reading and Kindles. “Many felt books would become obsolete, but I feel we got stronger,” said Joan. She also mentioned the many new options available to library patrons, including LEGO sets and games.
“Our library is a big asset to our community,” stated Esther. Added Joan, “Many groups have meetings in the library. You are welcome to visit your library.”
