Despite the cold and windy weather, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s track and field boys finally got the opportunity to compete outdoors. MOC-Floyd Valley welcomed the Hawks and eight other teams to the boys’ portion of the Dutch Relays held April 5 at Northwestern College in Orange City.
HMS finished fifth with 48 points. Spirit Lake claimed the team title with a 130 total.
The Hawks produced a couple of runner-up finishes. Kooper Ebel placed second in the 400 meters. He later joined Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm and Connor Dodd on the second-place 4×100 relay team.
That foursome finished third in the 4×200 relay. Also placing third were Adam Schierholz in the discus and Diehm in the long jump. The latter event included a fifth-place jump by Dodd.
The 100 meters saw Dodd finish fourth and Borden sixth. Another fourth-place was earned by the shuttle hurdle relay group of Ethan Wiersma, Bradley Zamudio, Tyson Tessum and Brenton Thomas. Placing fifth were Ebel in the high jump and the team of Tessum, Zamudio, Travis Kamradt and Bryce Dodge in the distance medley relay.
