The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Athletic Banquet was held May 4 at the high school. The speaker was Joel Penner, head football coach at Dordt University. The coaches of the various sports at HMS took turns introducing their athletes and recapping the team and individual accomplishments during the past year.
This year’s banquet included the second annual awarding of the Hard Working Athlete Awards to be given to one male and one female student. Any student in grades 9-12 is eligible and nominations are made by HMS coaches. The nominees must be involved in at least two sports. They must be committed to their sport and their teammates and also committed to getting better individually, as a team and as a school. Weight room attendance is important.
The 2021-22 Hard Working Athlete Awards went to a pair of seniors, Connor Dodd and Kaley Pearson. Dodd was also a recipient of last year’s inaugural award.
