Recently Joanne Andersen enjoyed a long weekend in Sioux Falls centered on performances of The Wizard of Oz at the Orpheum Theater presented by Dakota Academy of Performing Arts with a cast and crew of 70 students from across the city. Joanne’s granddaughter, Brooklyn, played Dorothy Gale. Opening night, Thursday, Joanne was present with her daughter, Athena, and cousins Sue and Aubree. For the Friday performance, Joanne and Athena were joined by Joanne’s son and family, Peter, Ornuma and Isabelle of Isanti, MN. More of Athena’s family came to cheer: Wade, her husband, and Gavin, Brady and Katie. Wade’s parents, Lou and Leroy of Sioux Falls and Wade’s siblings and families attended as well. Joanne’s daughter, April, and grandson, Rowan drove from the Iowa City area to attend the Saturday evening performance. They were hosted by Athena’s family where family time, games and meals were shared while everyone was there, around the performances. Joanne attended the Saturday matinee alone, making some family present for every performance. Watching from the balcony she got a peek at some of the special effects. The Sunday matinee, Brooklyn’s last performance of high school, was attended by Joanne, Athena, Wade, grandmother Lou, and Joanne’s brother, Henry and his wife Barbara of Des Moines. The scene where Dorothy says goodbye to her friends, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion was particularly poignant. Brooklyn received rave reviews from audiences, cast, crew, and directors. There was a line of fans, young and old, who requested a picture with Dorothy after each performance.
