No way home for multiple Hawk baserunners in loss to Trinity Christian
In its last turn at bat, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rallied from a five-run deficit with four runs and filled the bases with Hawks. Following the theme of this baseball game against Trinity Christian, HMS missed the chance to do further damage and the Tigers escaped with a 5-4 win June 1 at Hull.
“This was definitely a game of missed opportunities,” lamented Hawk head coach Jeremy Gloden. “We ended up leaving 11 guys on base. This especially hurts in a one-run defeat. We had our chances, but couldn’t find that key hit. I was proud of our rally at the end. We had the bases loaded, two outs, and a 3-2 count in the seventh. We just got the ball up in the wind and they made the play for the final out. The other thing that hurt us was miscues in key situations. Jacob (Cates) pitched a good game. He gave up zero earned runs. Credit Trinity. They took advantage of the extra opportunities that we gave them.”
With one out in the HMS seventh Vollink singled and then stole second and third. Tyson Tessum drew a walk and swiped second. Vollink scored on the passed ball that allowed Tessum to take third. Cates also coaxed a walk. Keaton Graves followed with a single to score Tessum.
With two outs Nick Bronstad reached base on an error. Jonny Ortiz followed with an infield single to drive in Cates. Another infield single, this time by Keith DeBoer, brought home Graves with the fourth run. Trinity’s first baseman was able to move under Ethan Diehm’s pop-up to end the drama and the game.
The Hawks also left the bases full in the second inning. Graves got on board by way of an error and Tanner Tesch walked. An error also put Ortiz aboard. In the third Vollink was stranded following a single. Tesch and Ortiz were left on base after drawing walks in the fourth. It was a walk in the fifth that led to Vollink again being stranded.
In the sixth Graves walked but was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Tesch. Bronstad drew a walk but another fielder’s choice quelled the threat.
Cates went the distance, allowing four hits. He struck out five batters, hit four and walked one. Each team committed three errors. Trinity left five runners on base.
