Hawks shut out by Akron-Westfield in five-inning contest
Ashton McCully blanked Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on two hits as Akron-Westfield topped the Hawks 10-0 June 6 at Akron. Already leading 4-0, the Westerners ended the War Eagle Conference game with six runs in the fifth.
“Free bases, fielding miscues, mental mistakes, and quiet bats continue to plague us,” noted HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “We have fallen into a funk and we need to continue to work our way out of it, especially during this tough stretch in our schedule.”
Jacob Cates got the pitching call and went four-plus innings, yielding nine runs on four hits. Six of the runs were earned. He recorded seven walks, five strikeouts and one hit batter. Jordan Ortega took the m6ound and tossed the final 2/3 of an inning. One was the number for Ortega as he allowed one earned run on one hit while striking out one batter and walking one. The Hawks committed three errors.
Trenton Vollink got the game off on a positive note with a base hit, but he was immediately erased on a fielder’s choice. A pair of strikeouts ended the inning. Tanner Tesch drew a one-out walk in the second inning but did not advance. The third inning saw Ethan Diehm lead off with a base hit. However, he was thrown out attempting to steal second.
Nick Bronstad walked with one out in the fourth. He was forced at second on a ground ball by Jonny Ortiz, who in turn was called out for runner interference. HMS was retired in order in the fifth.
