Larry and Fran Peelen attended the Annual National Oliver Summer Show held at Forrest City. Friday they toured the POW museums in Algona. Many people did not realize there were German Prisoners in Northwest Iowa. There were approximately 40 camps in Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Missouri. Yes some of the prisoners applied for sponsorship and citizenship after the war in 1945. The museum of the nativity was an interesting spot. All figurines were made by the prisoners in the evening after they had put in a day’s work. The material used was dirt molded into the figures then dried on the heating stove. The Peelens also toured the agriculture museum. Saturday was spent at the show touring exhibits, making acquaintances from many different states. There were many steam engines on display as there is a school in Forrest City to learn how to drive the engines. The Peelens report that they had never seen so many steam engines from the beginning of the engines until gas engines were used. They attended the banquet that evening. Iowa Corn Belt is known for putting on a good show. There were many in attendance all three days. Many of the vendors sold out of their products.
