Sanborn boasts two spelling champs

Delores Popma and Nate Schreur, both of Sanborn, were declared co-champions of the adult division at last week’s O’Brien County Fair Spelling Bee. Delores and Nate outlasted the rest of the competition to produce a head-to-head matchup. The competition continued for a number of rounds with both failing to correctly spell the word “fuchsia.”
With the entertainment scheduled to begin in the area, the competition was called a draw. Delores and Nate each received a food court voucher as a prize. With no award certificates having been prepared for the adults, the officials altered the unused first grade level certificates and presented them to the co-champs. Nate was also a recent winner of the Osceola County Spelling Bee. As Nate stated, “Two counties down – ninety-seven to go!”
