Seasons Center to host free training on Early Substance Exposure in children
On Thursday, September 8 Seasons Center for Behavioral Health will host a free training for health care and human service providers as well as professionals and community members that work closely with children. The training, titled Early Substance Exposure, will be led by Dr. Ira Chasnoff. It will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Sunnybrook Community Church in Sioux City.
Over one million children per year in this country are delivered by women who have used substances during pregnancy. This training will explore the biological and environmental factors that impact the development of substance-exposed children and provide an overview of maternal and child outcomes related to prenatal substance use.
Dr. Chasnoff is an award-winning author, researcher, lecturer, and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He is one of the nation’s leading researchers in the field of child development and the effects of prenatal and post-natal trauma on the newborn infant, child, and adolescent. Dr. Chasnoff led the development and operation of a laboratory preschool classroom to develop specific interventions for children with early trauma and developed a model Head Start Family Service Center for children and their families at risk from an adverse environment. He also has worked with a wide range of states across the nation and internationally in developing universal outreach and early intervention programs for children and families.
“Dr. Chasnoff is a remarkable speaker and we are excited to have him facilitate this training,” says Sarah Heinrichs, Grants Project Administrator at Seasons Center. “We need to continue to raise awareness and better understand the long-term impacts of childhood trauma caused by prenatal substance exposure. Dr. Chasnoff’s expertise makes him the perfect presenter to help us navigate that road.”
