Hawks capture one win at West Lyon Volleyball Tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn picked up its first volleyball victory of the year, but it came with a pair of losses. The Hawks defeated West Sioux 21-18 and 21-16 in the middle match for HMS at the season-opening West Lyon Volleyball Tourney. They began the tourney with a 21-16 game one win over Akron-Westfield but dropped the next two 21-16 and 15-10. HMS wrapped up play against the host Wildcats, falling 21-17 and 21-16.
“I felt the girls came out strong in the A-W match,” commented Hawk head coach Cheryl Kroese. “We were up the second game and gave it away so we struggled in the third. Disappointing not to get that first match but I was proud of how they came back against West Sioux and got the win. Our offense got rolling and we were able to take advantage of some poor serve receive play by them in that match. We battled hard against West Lyon. Our serving was really good and we attacked the ball but we struggled getting a block against their two strong hitters. Overall, it was a great night. We were able to find the things we need to build on as the season gets rolling.
Elise Haack and Abby Douma each recorded four kills in the opener against the Westerners with Frankie Mohni contributing eight assists. Emily Mutombo was 11-of-13 serving with four ace serves. The defensive effort included 10 digs by Abigail Otto and two blocks by Kylee Schiphoff.
In the win over the Falcons, Schiphoff provided six kills. Mohni had five assists, Abby Kunzman three and Eliza Tewes one. Digs showed Haack with nine, Otto with seven, Mohni with five and Kunzman with four. The latter also fired four aces on 19-of-19 serving. Haack and Schiphoff combined on a block.
Mohni assisted on eight of the nine kills in the West Lyon match. Four of those kills came from Haack. Kunzman was again 10-for-10 serving and she added another ace. Haack came up with seven digs and Otto six. Mutombo made three digs and had the lone block.
