Hawks lose momentum and the match to Sibley-Ocheyedan
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Sibley-Ocheyedan looked to be evenly matched after splitting the first two sets of their volleyball contest with each winning by two points. That view changed as the Generals won the final two sets by margins of seven and nine points to take the non-conference match played August 29 at Sibley. The scores for Sibley-Ocheyedan were 26-24, 25-27, 25-18 and 25-16.
“Going into the contest, I knew we would match up pretty evenly with S-O,” said HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “The first two sets were definitely representative of that. The third set we lost our momentum. Not sure what to attribute it to. We just came out a bit flat.”
Nonethless, the Hawk coach feels the team is trending in the right direction. “We saw some definite improvement since last week,” observed Kroese. “I was pleased with our blocking. We were able to come up with 12 total blocks on the night. I was also pleased with our aggressiveness at the serve line. We had 10 aces on the night and did a nice job of hitting our spots.”
Kylee Schiphoff pounded down 14 kills against the Generals and also assisted on three blocks. Abby Douma added two block assists while Elise Haack made two solo blocks and assisted on another. Frankie Mohni recorded 16 digs and an equal number of set assists. The dig totals also included Haack with 15 and Abigail Otto with 11. The Hawks were unsuccessful on 14 of their 86 serve attempts but Emily Mutombo erred only once in her 14 serves and delivered four aces.
