Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s cross country runners improved their times in competition at Sioux Central’s Chris Smith Invitational September 15. The event was run at the hilly Little Sioux Golf & Country Club in Sioux Rapids.
George Vargas turned in a time of 18:25.20 to finish 25th. Bryce Dodge was about a minute behind at 19:30.19 and placed 51st. Bunched together at the finish were Ryan Grotluschen in 65th place, Damian Dodge in 67th and Blaine Finster in 68th. Aiden Bush placed 79th.
As a team, the Hawks were 11th with 267 points. Okoboji won with a score of 40.
Alexis Croatt was the top finisher for the HMS girls, placing 45th. Gracie Knobloch was close behind in 47th. Juliana Pasillas came in 69th and Clara Funk 83rd. With just four runners, the Hawks didn’t score in the team competition, won by Alta-Aurelia.
