Hawks go 3-1 at GTRA tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had a successful day September 17 at the Titan Varsity Volleyball Tournament held at Graettinger. The Hawks earned wins over West Bend-Mallard, Harris-Lake Park and host Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Their only loss came against North Union. HMS closed the tournament sporting a season record of 6-5.
The Hawks had to rally to get their three-set win over West Bend-Mallard. The Wolverines took the opener 21-17. HMS tied the match with a 21-17 victory of their own and won the clincher 15-12. Elise Haack had eight kills and Frankie Mohni 12 assists. Abby Douma made a solo block and assisted on two others. Haack and Abigail Otto reached double digits in digs with 11 and 10 respectively. HMS missed only two of 51 serves. Kylee Schiphoff and Abby Kunzman were each 11-of-11 with Schiphoff serving four aces and Kunzman one.
HMS kept Harris-Lake Park winless, recording set scores of 21-10 and 21-8. Mohni assisted on 10 of the Hawks’ 12 kills. Those kills included three each from Kunzman and Schiphoff. Douma got a solo block and assisted Kunzman on another. Haack came up with a third of the team’s 15 digs against the Wolves. Schiphoff and Mohni each served up three aces.
The Hawks took the first set from GTRA 21-12. The Titans made the second one interesting before HMS won the battle 21-18. Schiphoff recorded eight kills and a kill efficiency of .533. Mohni’s assists totaled 13. Eliza Tewes and Douma each notched pair of solo blocks in the match. On the back end of the defense Haack totaled a whopping 16 digs. Otto was 9-for-9 serving with an ace.
North Union got the Hawks 21-9 in the first set but HMS battled the Warriors in set two before falling 21-19. Schiphoff had four kills and Mohni eight assists. The eight block assists included three from Schiphoff and two from Haack. Kunzman and Haack each dug up four Warrior attacks. HMS was 27-of-28 serving with Kunzman going 7-for-7 with an ace.
The Hawks host their own tournament September 24 at Hartley. Other teams competing are Gehlen Catholic, Newell-Fonda, Okoboji, Rock Valley, Sioux City West, South O’Brien and Trinity Christian. Pool play begins at 9:00 a.m. with HMS taking the court following the first match in the new gym.
