Hawks host Homecoming hammering of South O’Brien
Homecoming Week at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got off to a rousing start. The Hawk volleyball team saw to that by completing a three-set sweep of rival South O’Brien September 12 at Hartley. Game scores were 21-10, 21-19 and 25-21.
“Getting the sweep against South O’Brien was a great way to start Homecoming week!” said an exuberant Cheryl Kroese, HMS head coach. “Definitely felt like some of the momentum from the West Sioux win carried over, however I’m just proud of how these ladies come into practice each and every day and put forth quality effort. Wins don’t just come from our attitude and effort on the night of the game, it comes in being consistent with it day in and day out. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season holds as we continue our journey.”
Things were fairly close in the first set before the HMS ran off six straight points to lead 17-8. The Hawks took a 4-0 lead in set two but soon found themselves trailing. They moved back in front and later led 19-13. South O’Brien got within four points at 23-19 before HMS closed out the set. Not much separated the two teams in set three. The Wolverines took a 21-19 lead and a fourth set seemed a distinct possibility. The Hawks rejected that idea, scoring the next six points to secure the sweep.
HMS produced a team kill efficiency of .250. Kylee Schiphoff put down seven of her 15 attacks for kills, with no errors, to rate a kill efficiency of .467. Elise Haack and Abby Kunzman also notched seven kills with Abby Douma adding another four. Frankie Mohni assisted on 20 of the team’s 28 kills. Kunzman reached double digits in digs with 11 and Emily Mutombo recorded a pair of block assists. Kunzman went 17-for-17 at the service line. The nine ace serves included four from Mohni.
