Hawks finish 1-2 at HMS tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got one three-set win and suffered a loss in three sets during play at the HMS Volleyball Tournament held September 24 at Hartley. Advancement from Pool A play came down to the match with Rock Valley and HMS fell 2-0, ending their day. The loss dropped the Hawks to 7-9 on the season.
Newell-Fonda lost to Gehlen Catholic 2-0 in Pool B play but flipped the script in the championship match to beat the Jays 21-9 and 21-19.
HMS faced Okoboji in its first match of the day. The Hawks rallied from a 17-10 deficit to win the first set 21-18. Set two was tied at 16-16. The Pioneers then swung things their way to win 21-17. HMS fell behind 8-3 in set three and was unable to recover, losing 15-7. A trio of Hawks each recorded six kills: Elise Haack, Abby Douma and Kylee Schiphoff. Frankie Mohni assisted on 19 of the team’s 21 kills. The 39 digs included 13 from Haack and 11 from Abby Kunzman. Haack was 11-for-11 serving.
South O’Brien was next up for HMS and the Wolverines took the first set 21-16 after leading most of the way. The Hawks’ response was to jump in front 10-2 in set two. South O’Brien closed to within two at 12-10 but HMS went on to get the set 21-17 and even the match. Set three saw the Hawks again race out to a 10-2 lead on the way to a convincing 15-5 win. Schiphoff powered down nine kills and had a kill efficiency of .350. Haack contributed six kills with an efficiency of .333. Mohni supplied 18 set assists and Haack dug up 14 Wolverine attacks. HMS served at a 94 percent clip. Abigail Otto was 14-of-14, Kunzman 13-of-13 and Morgan Grooters and Emily Mutombo each 5-for-5.
Rock Valley broke a 12-12 tie against the Hawks and went on to win the first set 21-17. HMS trailed throughout set two which the Rockets won by the score of 21-16. The 11 Hawk kills included five from Schiphoff and four from Haack. Mohni recorded nine set assists. Douma was assisted on three blocks by Haack, Kunzman and Mohni. Otto and Mohni each made six digs. The Hawks were unsuccessful on only two of their 34 serves. Haack served 11-for-11 and Kunzman 8-for-8.
