Remsen St. Mary’s shrugs off first-set loss to beat HMS 3-1
A promising start by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn faded into the distance as Remsen St. Mary’s took control to win the War Eagle Conference match-up 3-1 September 20 at Hartley. With the loss, HMS falls to 2-3 in conference play.
There was little to separate the Hawks of a different color in a first set that went down to the wire. HMS came out of a time out to win the final three points and take the set 26-24.
The host team appeared to carry no momentum into set two as St. Mary’s got out to a 5-0 advantage. The lead grew to 19-5 before HMS rallied, only to fall 25-14. The third set also saw the visiting Hawks jump in front, this time 6-0. They maintained a comfortable advantage on the way to a 25-9 victory.
HMS fell behind again in set four but stayed close and, at one point, was down only 14-11. However, St. Mary’s outscored the home team 11-5 the rest of the way to win the set 25-16 and capture the match.
Kill totals showed Kylee Schiphoff with 10, Elise Haack and Abby Douma each with six and Abby Kunzman with five. Frankie Mohni recorded 26 set assists. Kunzman had the lone solo block but Haack and Schiphoff teamed up to produce an additional two blocks. Haack made 20 digs and Abigail Otto 14. Kunzman and Otto were successful on all of their serves, with Kunzman serving 16 times and Otto 12. Each served an ace.
