Third-ranked Generals roar past Hawk girls
High-powered Sibley-Ocheyedan had plenty under the hood February 2 as the Generals hosted Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at Sibley. The third-rated team in Class 2A rolled to a 94-41 victory over the Hawks.
“Sibley-Ocheyedan is a good team,” acknowledged HMS head coach Jenni Van Otterloo. “We came out and had a great first quarter, only trailing by five points. We set a few team goals before the game and we accomplished most of them, giving us a few small victories to celebrate in the locker room. I’m proud of the girls for their efforts and not giving up, even when they run the score on us.”
Scoring for the Hawks showed Moriah Otto with 11 points, Kylee Schiphoff with nine, Emily Mutombo with eight, Abby Douma with four, Elise Haack and Frankie Mohni with three apiece, Eliza Tewes with two and Lindsey Van Es with one. Mutombo and Mohni each contributed three assists.
The top rebounders were Mutombo with seven and Otto with six. Mutombo, Douma and Gracie Knobloch each had a steal as Sibley-Ocheyedan was charged with five turnovers. Douma rejected two shots. HMS turned the ball over 19 times.
The hosts from the Siouxland Conference burned the nets with 60 percent shooting. The Generals were 39-of-65 from the floor, including 7-of-15 from three-point range. HMS made 16 of 52 shots to finish at 31 percent. The Hawks were successful on three of 16 trey attempts and six of 10 free throw tries. Sibley-Ocheyedan was 9-of-12 at the charity stripe.
