Hawk boys wrap up track season at State
Several Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn track and field boys brought down the curtain on their season on a grand stage. The athletes delivered their finale in a pair of events in Class 2A at last week’s State Track & Field Championships held May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“I could not be more impressed with our kids at State Track,” remarked Hawk boys track and field coach Jay Eilers. “They represented HMS School District and our community to the highest level.”
First up for the Hawks was senior Kooper Ebel in the 400 Meter Dash on Thursday evening. He placed ninth, just missing a medal. “Kooper ran extremely well in the open 4, finishing ninth, breaking his own school record at 51.18 and finishing his amazing high school career representing HMS along the way.”
The 4×100 meter relay preliminaries were held on Friday evening. “Our 4×100 had some changes at the last second and our kids responded very well,” said Eilers. “Bradley Zamudio to Ethan Diehm to Kooper Ebel to James Gellerman ran a 44.99. Not what we wanted but extremely pleased how our kids responded and took care of each other.” The unit, featuring three seniors and sophomore Gellerman, finished 21st overall.
Eilers summed up by stating, “Definitely a great way to wrap up our season”.
