Multiple facets of the game shine for Hawks in win over Trinity
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn put it all together in defeating Trinity Christian 10-0 in six innings June 1 at Hartley. The game was postponed one day due to rainy weather.
“I was happy to see all three aspects of the game finally come together tonight,” expressed HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “We played a clean game in the field behind Jacob (Cates) and we put a lot of good swings on the ball at the plate. Jacob was efficient on the mound. He was able to cut down on the walks and kept their hitters off balance. Tanner (Tesch), Bradley (Van Beek), and Jack (Mastbergen) all had multiple hits for us. Definitely a confidence boost as we head into the middle of our schedule.”
Cates issued just three walks in his six innings of work. He allowed even fewer hits: two. Meanwhile he struck out 10 Tiger batters. There were only two errors committed behind Cates.
The success at the plate included Tesch going 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the first and an RBI single in the second. He also scored three runs. Van Beek contributed an RBI single in the second and a run-scoring double in the third. Mastbergen hit singles in both the first and fourth innings. The first hit drove in a run.
Cates had a single and a walk, scoring both times. Blake Meendering picked up an RBI when he hit a ball that was misplayed by the second baseman. Ben Waddell notched a fourth-inning single.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth. Ethan Diehm walked and stole second. He was driven home by Evan Eilers with the Hawks’ 10th and final hit.
Trinity was guilty of one error and left five runners on base. The Hawks stranded eight runners.
