Railroad Days Committee Hard at Work

Railroad Days celebration will be here before you know it. This year a separate Railroad Days committee was created and the members have been hard at work coordinating the annual event. Rob Balt volunteered to head up the committee.
Railroad Days will be taking place in four short weeks from now and the majority of the events will be held at Miller Park. The dates are July 20-23 for this year’s Railroad Days weekend. The members of the committee formed last year to host the weekend are Rob Balt, Jean Boll, Chris Cammann, Jodi Krikke, Mariah Stallman, Jennifer Van Dam, Alan Visser and Miranda Wetrich. The members have put in long hours over the past 12 months seeking ways to revitalize the yearly Sanborn festivities. Some of the first meetings were filled discussions on what worked and what didn’t in our annual weekend, and which types of events and activities could be introduced to make the weekend a great time for everyone again.
One of the committee’s first decisions was to move many of the weekend events to Miller Park. The committee wanted to showcase and focus on this under-utilized gem that we are fortunate to have in our small town. Change for most is difficult, but the committee hopes everyone will realize that Miller Park will be a great place for the Railroad events for many years to come. This year’s weekend schedule will be coming out early in July’s so make sure you are watching for its arrival.
Some of the new activities the committee is introducing this year are, starting with Thursday night as an early start to the weekend, “Cruise Night”, themed Patriotic, so dress up your ride with American colors and drive down main street to celebrate. Friday will bring an open house for the Sanborn Hardware Store featuring a cookoff contest and community supper, a kids’ dance will be hosted in Miller Park beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday will bring multiple new activities:
- Kids Zone will be open Noon to 6:00 p.m. featuring many fun activities for all the youth.
- Sand Volleyball tournament will begin at Noon in the newly expanded court area.
• Vintage tractor display at the park - Multiple food trucks will be present with a variety of choices from 1:00 to 11:00 pm.
- A beer garden hosted by Rails will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 am.
- Slippery Pig contest will be held from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.
