Hawks unable to collect a win at HMS Volleyball Tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn proved to be a little too gracious as host of the HMS Volleyball Tourney. The Hawks failed to collect a win at the event held September 23 at Hartley. Twice HMS took an opponent to a third and deciding set but both times the Hawks came up empty. Losses in pool play to Okoboji, South O’Brien and Rock Valley dropped HMS to 4-10 for the year.
HMS opened against Okoboji and lost the first set 21-13. The home team stayed alive with a 21-19 set two victory. The Pioneers scored the first 12 points of the third set on the way to a 15-2 win. Kylee Schiphoff had five kills, Abby Douma four and Moriah Otto three. Frankie Mohni recorded 10 assists. Lindsey Van Es and Eliza Tewes each notched four digs and Tewes made a solo block as did Schiphoff. Kinsey Schirmer was 8-of-8 serving with an ace.
Next up for the Hawks was South O’Brien. HMS led for the final half of set one, eventually winning 21-17. In the second set the Hawks fell behind 6-1 but came back to tie at 6-6. The Wolverines took back the lead at 7-6 and would not relinquish it, going on to win 21-15. In this third set HMS did not let its opponent race away to a big lead. However, South O’Brien seized the advantage at 5-4 and again would not give it up. The final tally this time around was 15-8.
Against the Wolverines Schiphoff again led in kills, this time with six. Mohni again had 10 assists. Van Es came up with 10 digs followed by Schirmer, Tewes and Mohni, each with seven. Schiphoff made a solo block with Otto and Douma teaming up for another. Van Es had a 7-for-7 serving match.
Rock Valley needed to defeat the Hawks to remain unbeaten in Pool A and that they did. The scores were 21-6 and 21-13. This time it was Douma with five kills, Schiphoff with four and Mohni with 11 assists. Mohni also led in digs with five. Douma registered the only block. Otto was 4-of-4 serving.
