Hawk girls open the season with loss to ranked Sioux Central
The season tipped off November 21 for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn basketball girls with a trip to Sioux Rapids to take on Sioux Central. The Rebels, who were 12th in the Class 2A preseason rankings, got rolling early, taking a 25-point lead after one quarter. In the end it was a 76-38 win for the home team, which improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Rebels shot 51 percent from the field, including 8-of-17 from three-point range. Four of their players reached double figures in scoring, led by Bradi Krager, who tallied 24 points.
HMS got 10 points from Kylee Schiphoff, nine from Abby Douma, seven from Moriah Otto, three from both Gracie Knobloch and Eliza Tewes and two each from Frankie Mohni, Addison Sheeler and Kamryn Ebel. The Hawks were 14-of-44 from the floor for 32 percent. They connected on a third of their nine three-point tries as well as hitting a third of their 21 free throw attempts.
Knobloch and Mohni each passed for three assists and Otto and Mohni notched two steals apiece. Douma blocked a shot. The rebounding leader was Schiphoff with five. Grabbing four rebounds apiece were Otto, Sheeler and Tewes.
