HMS girls go to the block to beat Gehlen Catholic


A successful inside game during the first half set Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn up for a 55-42 win over Gehlen Catholic December 15 at Le Mars. The Hawks led 28-17 at halftime in picking up their first War Eagle Conference win in three tries. HMS evened its season record at 4-4.
Moriah Otto scored 18 points and Abby Douma seven, mostly from the lane. Kylee Schiphoff’s 17 points included three long-range buckets. Eliza Tewes chipped in with six points, Lindsey Van Es with five and Addison Sheeler with two. The ball movement resulted in four assists for Gracie Knobloch, three for Frankie Mohni, two for both Schiphoff and Douma and one for Van Es.
The Hawks shot 35 percent, going 21-for-60. They were 4-of-20 from three-point range and 9-of-19 at the charity stripe. They were guilty of 17 turnovers.
Douma pulled down 15 of the 40 HMS rebounds, rejected six of the Jays’ shots and stole the ball away twice. Schiphoff grabbed seven rebounds and Mohni added another two steals.
