HMS bowlers win home triangular with Emmetsburg, West Sioux

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn bowling teams were back in action for the first time in 2024, hosting Emmetsburg and West Sioux January 16 in a triangular held at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn. The HMS Boys won with a total pins score of 2757, with Emmetsburg second at 2428 and West Sioux third at 2315. The Girls team competed only against West Sioux, as Emmetsburg did not have a girls team. The HMS Girls defeated West Sioux 1830 to 1695.
“We had a good day,” said HMS coach Julia Meyer. “Both the Boys and Girls teams won their competitions! It was exciting to win our own triangular and we had a an extra highlight with Keyanna Brower taking High Game and High Series medals for the Girls! Her high game was 145 and her two game series was 280 total. Of our Boys, Eli Mastbergen had a couple of 200 games: 214 and 200, Dawson Niichel with a 202, and a 192 by Graham Lux. The Boys High game and series medals were won by Evan (last name unknown) from Emmetsburg with 244 game and 476 Series.”
The series totals for the HMS boys were 414 for Eli Mastbergen, 380 for Dawson Niichel, 357 for both Graham Lux and Damian Dodge, 333 for Jack Mastbergen and 315 for Caleb Aaron. The Baker games for the boys were 181, 178, 203, 168 and 186 for a total of 916.
In addition to Brower’s 280 series, Jordan Lux bowled a 249, Lexi Croatt a 245, Lillian Van Loon a 223 and Annika Overmire a 221. The girls rolled Baker game scores of 90, 135, 129, 124 and 134 for a total of 612.
“Both the teams were a little rusty with getting back from Christmas/New Year’s break, but they pulled out the win with their determination,” said Meyer. “I am proud of all the bowlers and their efforts to get the wins. With the snows and cold January weather, we are having a bit of a struggle getting in all our practices but are working extra hard when we do have them, as we are nearing the final meets and regional district play is just less than a month away which is February 12 and 13 here in Sanborn. We always appreciate the fans, parents and families for their support, as well as Locomotion Lanes so we can have this sport in high school, as this is something that they can do all their lives.”
