HMS girls top Falcons on the road
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn shot reasonably well against West Sioux and took care of the basketball. That helped HMS come away with a 47-38 road win over the Falcons January 19 at Hawarden. The Hawks went 17-for-47 from the field (36 percent) and committed just eight turnovers in picking up the War Eagle Conference victory.
The balanced HMS attack included 10 points from Gracie Knobloch, nine from both Abby Douma and Frankie Mohni, eight from Kylee Schiphoff, six from Moriah Otto and five from Lindsey Van Es. The Hawks got four assists from Mohni and three apiece from Knobloch and Addy Sheeler.
HMS was 6-of-24 from behind the three-point line and 7-of-12 at the charity stripe. The Falcons’ 26 percent shooting effort (13-of-51) included seven treys in 29 attempts. West Sioux sank half of its 10 free throws. The host team was guilty of 12 turnovers.
The top rebounders were Douma with eight boards and Otto with six. Schiphoff made four steals and rejected a pair of shots. Douma made her defensive presence felt with five blocked shots.
