Hinton girls explode from the gate, leave Hawks behind


Hinton set the tone early against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, jumping out to a 17-0 lead. The Blackhawks finished the first quarter with a 31-6 edge and went on to rout HMS 70-29 January 26 at Hartley. The loss evened the Hawks’ War Eagle Conference record at 4-4 and dropped them to 10-8 on the season.
The visitors drained a third of their 30 three-point attempts and were 23-of-56 overall (41 percent). HMS shot 28 percent (10-of-36) but was just 1-of-10 from long range. Hinton went 14-for-22 at the free throw line while the Hawks converted eight of 15 charity tosses.
HMS was guilty of 35 turnovers. The Blackhawks turned the ball over 18 times. Kylee Schiphoff made two steals for the Hawks and Abby Douma blocked three shots.
Schiphoff provided what little offense HMS could muster, finishing with 18 points. Moriah Otto and Eliza Tewes each scored four points and Douma tallied three. Schiphoff, Tewes, Frankie Mohni and Hannah Tessum each had an assist.
The Hawks held their own on the boards. Douma captured nine rebounds, Otto eight and Tewes five.
