Winning Comets apply some tough D to Hawk boys
Defense turned into some early offense for Boyden-Hull as the Comets led Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 29-5 after one quarter of a 62-24 win January 25 at Hartley. Easy baskets helped the visitors from the Siouxland Conference to shoot 52 percent for the game.
“I thought we struggled with their half court defense, especially in that first half,” commented HMS head coach Naet Hoaglund. “Boyden-Hull plays a tough half court defense and they make it difficult to get the ball where you want it to go. They were able to jump some passing lanes for layups. They applied really good ball pressure and did a good job of guarding dribble penetration. I thought when we started moving the ball a little quicker and when we started moving quicker off the ball we were able to get some quality shot opportunities. When our spacing improved, things seemed to be a little smoother on the offensive end. We got better looks in the second half but couldn’t get them to fall.”
The Hawks shot 18 percent with eight baskets in 45 attempts. They did hit six of 15 treys and they sank two of their three free throw attempts.
Lawton Schiphoff hit four of those three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Zac Pearson scored five points and Jayden Leth three. George Vargas and Isaac Schierholz each tallied two points. Contributing two assists apiece were Leth and Vargas.
Schierholz led the team in rebounds with six. Leth and Vargas each grabbed four. Pearson stole the ball three times and Leth blocked a shot. The turnover tally showed HMS with 19 and the Comets with 14.
