HMS bowlers top Sioux Central in home dual

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn bowling teams entertained Sioux Central January 26 at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn and picked up a couple of wins. The HMS Girls were victorious 2067 to 1573 while the HMS Boys won 2819 to 2123.
“We are excited and proud to see that the girls’ practice and efforts at the meets are paying off,” said HMS coach Julia Meyer. “They have increased their singles scores each meet. This is good for confidence, as we near the end of the season and go into the district meet. Heather Elgersma led the way with a 316 series in single games of 161 and 155, followed by Jordan Lux with a 294 series – games of 156 and 138. The girls’ Baker games scores have been increasing and are working on getting them higher. They came away with a win by 494 pins!”
Rounding out the girls two-game series scores were Keyanna Brower with a 283, Annika Overmire with a 277 and Lexi Croatt with a 253. The Baker games for the girls were 151, 117, 98, 135 and 143 for a total of 644.
“The boys also won quite handily on Friday,” noted Meyer. “Their individual games gave them a good lead. Jack Mastbergen led the way with 226 and 257 for a total of 483! That was followed by Graham Lux’s 368 series – games of 197 and 171. Hawks had a nice lead going into the five Baker Games and averaged 177 in their Baker Games, which helped assure their win. I’d like to see a higher average per game in the Bakers and the boys know that we’ll need that to compete and go to state again this year. There is still some work to be done there.”
Riley Russell bowled a 366 series, Eli Mastbergen a 365, Damian Dodge a 349 and Skyler Shaffer a 297. The boys rolled Baker game scores of 163, 212, 180, 161 and 172 for an 888 total.
“All in all it was a good night!” concluded Meyer. “JV Boys bowled well also and the JV 1 team also compiled 250 more pins than the Sioux Central varsity! They also have been working on improving as the scores are showing. We are blessed to have so many good bowlers here at HMS!”
