Mill Creek Sewer Project Taking Steps
by Mari Radtke
Upgrades to the Prairie Heritage Center, with funding initiated by Gregg Struve in memory of his parents, is getting competitive pricing. Initial cost estimates were considered by some board members to be exorbitant. The redesign committee are considering additional studios to ask for estimates. The current price tag is ranging up to half a million dollars. Financial support for the project can be made at Siouxland Community Foundation.
Connecting sanitary sewer services from Mill Creek Park just east of Paullina to the City’s infrastructure has been a talking point for several years. A connection was installed under Highway 10 in 2014 during another construction project. O’Brien County Conservation Board was awarded $150,000 from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
Director Mark Wilson reported to OCCB at its regular meeting on Wednesday April 10 the status of the project. DGR Engineering is currently putting together a bid packet. The project is expected to be constructed in multiple stages over a period of years. The first year will begin at west of the park’s main entrance. “The Lodge,” and the maintenance shed are expected to be connected first. A desire for year-round facilities at the Lodge is adding some difficulty to the planning. Current plans for phase 2 is to bring the concession stand and restrooms online. Campgrounds would be next with the cabins to be the final phase. The total cost of the project will exceed seven figures.
The beach shack upgrades are nearing completion. The foundation and plumbing hookups are complete, and a rinse shower is nearing completion. Kayaks, canoes and other water accessories will be available for rent at the shack by Paullina Hardware.
ARPA funds are also allocated to build showers at Tjossem Park south of Primghar. Wilson reported that getting commitment from contractors for the project is a problem. Tjossem Park campsites are available for long term camping beginning this year. To find out more about long term camping at Tjosesm Park call the Prairie Heritage Center at 712-29507200.
