Wolves hand HMS a WEC loss
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn began War Eagle Conference play May 24 by hosting Harris-Lake Park. The Wolves scored six runs in both the second and fifth innings and downed HMS 15-3. The loss dropped the Hawks to 1-4 on the young season.
HMS scored its three runs in the fifth inning. Aidan Espeland singled and Talen Zearing and Jack Mastbergen each drew a walk to load the bases. Blake Meendering singled home Espeland and Jacob Cates hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Zearing. A base hit by Hunter Daggett knocked in Mastbergen.
Meendering and Aiden Bush each had a pair of singles and Grant Kunzman collected one. Mastbergen walked twice and Zearing once.
Starting pitcher Dominic Tripp gave up seven runs on two hits. Just one of the runs was earned. He walked four batters and struck out three. Mastbergen pitched in relief, yielding eight runs on four hits. Half of those runs were earned. He recorded five strikeouts and three walks while hitting two batters. The Hawks were plagued by errors – six in all.
