Gehlen Catholic strikes late to get past Hawks
Gehlen Catholic scored the tie-breaking runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to deal Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn a 5-3 loss June 12 at Le Mars. HMS had just got through knotting the score with two runs of their own in the top of the inning.
Pitcher Kamryn Ebel took the complete game loss, allowing four earned runs and seven hits. She struck out six batters while walking three and hitting one. HMS had three errors.
The eleven Hawk hits included two apiece from Eliza Tewes, Addy Sheeler, Delaney Murphy and Ebel. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they stranded 12 runners, compared to half that many for the Lady Jays.
“Kam pitched a good game,” said HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “Overall our defense is looking better and the bats are coming. We left a lot on the bases last night and we need to keep working on improving the bats.”
Gehlen scored twice in the first, including an unearned run. The Hawks cut the lead in half in the second as Murphy got a base hit and scored on Frankie Mohni’s RBI single. The Lady Jays again went up by two with a tally in the bottom of the inning.
Things were not looking good in the sixth until Ebel came through with a two-out single. Kinsey Schirmer followed with a base hit. Tewes singled to drive them both in. In the decisive bottom of the sixth, Gehlen benefited from a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
