Hawks go down fighting in loss to Gehlen Catholic
Gehlen Catholic remained unbeaten in War Eagle Conference play by downing Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 3-0 September 24 at Le Mars. HMS made each succeeding set a little bit more of a challenge for their hosts as the scores were 25-13, 25-18 and 28-26. The loss dropped the Hawks to 2-4 in the conference.
“Gehlen did a great job of catching us off guard to start the match with their aggressive serving,” noted HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “Once we adjusted to that, we were definitely in the match. These ladies battled throughout the night. They were aggressive, communicated well and really put in solid effort. Sometimes that doesn’t show in the outcome of the match as a ball here or there that doesn’t roll in your direction changes the outcome, but I’m so very proud of this team and know they will continue to work to improve.”
Abby Douma and Kylee Schiphoff each recorded eight kills with efficiencies of .316 and .304 respectively. Frankie Mohni contributed 23 set assists and 10 digs. Moriah Otto made two solo blocks and Eliza Tewes was 15-of-15 serving with the team’s lone ace.
