Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn began last week by running in the Alta-Aurelia Cross Country Meet. The event was held September 30 at Alta Golf & Country Club.
HMS coach Nate Hoagland thought his boys runners, as a whole looked a little flat entering the race. “We seemed a little mentally and physically drained and some of our times reflected that,” said the coach. “It’s a good opportunity for us to find some grit and persevere through those tough races when maybe we don’t feel our best. He did, however, come away with positives. “James Carlin did really well, and was not far off his PR,” said Hoaglund. “I thought he ran a really nice race. Simone (Dellavedova) ran a really nice race as well and was really close to another PR. He looked really confident and comfortable in his race and that was awesome to see.”
Damian Dodge finished 42nd, Ryan Grotluschen 45th, Carlin 49th, Aiden Bush 55th, Blaine Finster 58th, Dellavedova 69th and Carter Dolphin 79th. The Hawks were tenth as a team with 239 points. The winner was Sioux Central with a score of 61. Moises Gonzales placed 35th in the JV race.
Cherokee and the host Warriors each totaled 45 points in girls varsity competition. The Braves won the tie breaker to claim first place. For the Hawks, Kamryn Ebel was 26th and Gracie Knobloch 46th. In the JV run, Brooklyn Erickson finished 10th. “It was awesome to see Gracie Knoblock get over the hump and get another PR,” said her coach. “To see some of her hard work start to pay off and for her to reach some of those individual goals of her is really cool to see. At the JV level, Brooklyn continues to get faster and faster. It’s been fun to watch her growth as a runner this season and I’m proud of what she continues to do.”
