Sanborn fire leaves house a total loss
Sanborn Fire Department battled a house fire Monday afternoon with the home being judged a total loss.
The Department was paged to 707 Walker Street in southwest Sanborn at 2:30 p.m. According to Sanborn Fire Chief Randy Lyman the blaze likely began on the back deck at the south side of the house. There was an electrical outlet near a deck box and Lyman said the fire appeared to have started in that area but no official cause was known as of Monday night.
The wind blew the fire up the side of the house and into the eaves. It then popped the patio door and blew into the house where the kitchen became totally engulfed in flames.
Nancy Wesselink was inside the house and reportedly heard what was probably the patio door popping. She was able to exit the house and was not injured. There were no other occupants of the house at the time of the fire.
Sanborn called Sheldon Fire Company for assistance and their ladder truck was used to vent the roof. Hartley Fire was called as well but they were not needed as the roof did not need to be dismantled.
Sanborn Firefighters were on scene until about 5:15 p.m. Lyman estimated they used about 2000 gallons of water and about 15 gallons of foam to battle the fire.
