West Lyon brings down the curtain on Hawks’ season
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was on the receiving end early as the Hawks traveled to West Lyon for a Class 2A Region 7 volleyball tournament quarterfinal. HMS regained its footing to give the 18-6 Wildcats a third-set battle before losing in straight sets to end the season at 7-14. Set scores for West Lyon were 25-13, 25-13 and 25-22.
“I felt like West Lyon did a great job early in the match of taking us out of our comfort zone making us struggle defensively,” shared Hawk head coach Cheryl Kroese. “Their offensive power was effective and they mixed it up nicely which kept us on our heels. Once we were able to make some adjustments we were able to make a game of it in set three. I was proud of our ladies for continuing to work hard until the end of the match.”
The Hawks’ two senior middle hitters were prominent as Abby Douma produced nine kills and Kylee Schiphoff added five kills on .333 efficiency. Each also made a solo block. Another senior, Frankie Mohni, provided 16 set assists.
The team leaders in digs were Mohni with 10 and, with eight apiece, senior Eliza Tewes and junior Lindsey Van Es. Senior Addy Sheeler served 12-for-12 in the match. Van Es was 5-of-5 serving, Tewes 7-of-8, Schiphoff 6-of-7 and junior Moriah Otto 5-of-6.
This marked the last match for Douma, Mohni, Schiphoff, Sheeler and Tewes. “The seniors will definitely leave a big hole to fill in the lineup for next season,” stated Kroese. “Each and every one of them proved to be valuable components of our team. These young ladies are respectable, hard working athletes but more importantly they are terrific human beings! I’ve been blessed to be able to spend time with them these past four years!”
The Hawk coach took a glance at the just-completed season, but with an eye on the future. “Looking back on the season we obviously didn’t achieve some of the goals we set out to,” said Kroese. “With any disappointment in life, you find out what and how you can learn from it and keep striving to improve. This will be our challenge in the offseason for our underclassmen as they continue those efforts towards next season.”
