Douma triple double powers HMS girls past Jays

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn made sure it’s first actual War Eagle Conference game of the season was a W. The Hawks posted 17 or more points in three of the four quarters to defeat Gehlen Catholic 64-49 December 13 at Hartley. The victory was the fourth of the season to go along with two losses.
Despite what the stats might indicate, HMS head coach Ashley Tessum saw getting the win as very much a team effort. “I was really happy with our teamwork on Friday night,” offered Tessum. “Abby Douma put up 26 points, which is outstanding, but it also showed how well our guards assisted her by feeding her good passes into the post position. Our rebounding and defense was phenomenal as well. Abby accomplished a triple double on the night: 26 points, 18 rebounds and 11 blocks. Lindsey Van Es’s defense was top notch, as she was tasked with the job of face-guarding Gehlen’s leading scorer and point guard. Overall, I couldn’t have been happier with the teamwork and every girl’s effort Friday night.”
The decision to get the ball to Douma was backed up by her 8-for-11 shooting. It helped the Hawks shoot 46 percent as a team with 21 buckets in 46 tries. HMS was 4-of-11 from deep and 18-of-28 at the free throw line.
Kylee Schiphoff had two of those long range baskets and finished with 15 points. Moriah Otto added nine points, Gracie Knobloch and Frankie Mohni six each and Van Es two. Knobloch and Eliza Tewes each passed for three assists while Schiphoff, Van Es and Addy Sheeler had two apiece.
The Hawks pounded the boards to the tune of 49 rebounds. Otto was second to Douma with 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. Schiphoff corralled eight caroms.
Three times Knobloch took ball from the Jays. Schiphoff made two steals. HMS was guilty of 25 turnovers.
