Hawk girls suffer narrow loss to Gehlen in regular season finale
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn traveled to Le Mars February 10 to close out the regular season by way of a non-conference match-up with Gehlen Catholic. The Jays avenged an earlier 15-point loss by topping HMS 58-54. The Hawks enter the tournament with a record of 13-8.
Gehlen outshot the Hawks 42 percent (21-of-50) to 34 percent (20-of-59). HMS connected on six three-pointers compared to just a pair for the Jays but the home team went 14-for-27 from the free throw line while the Hawks were 8-for-19.
Scoring for HMS showed Kylee Schiphoff with 16 points, Moriah Otto with 13, Gracie Knobloch with 11, Frankie Mohni with six, Abby Douma with four and Lindsey Van Es and Addy Sheeler with two apiece. Knobloch was the assists leader with three. The Jays got 14 points from both Rysaiah Sitzmann and Halle Walgenbach.
Otto pulled down 16 rebounds, made three steals and blocked a shot. Douma recorded nine boards and six blocks. Knobloch and Schiphoff each made a pair of steals and Schiphoff blocked two shots. Each team committed 15 turnovers.
