Hawk girls compete at War Eagle Conference Meet

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls track and field team traveled to Hawarden May 5 for the War Eagle Conference Meet hosted by West Sioux. The Hawks scored 20 points in the meet to place ninth. Hinton easily won the conference championship with a 175 points. Gehlen Catholic was second with 90 points.
“The girls had a really good night on Monday,” said HMS head coach Jeremiah Delzer. “They did a great job of competing and pressing to build up their PR’s. The night didn’t start the way we hoped but as the night went on we really found a way to push ourselves and hit a better stride. Our girls relays did a great job in taking down our PR’s in the 4×100 and the 4×200.”
HMS finished third in the 4×200 meter relay with Payton Diehm, Keely Ebel, Kamryn Ebel and Pamela Mutombo. The 4×400 relay of Kamryn Ebel, Laura Vargas, Lexi Schmillen and Ava Vogt placed fourth.
In the shot put Hannah Tessum was fifth and Cammy Wilson sixth. Vargas finished sixth in the long jump.
Four other relays also scored for the Hawks. The 4×100 of Diehm, Keely Ebel, Kamryn Ebel and Mutombo was fifth as was the sprint medley of Diehm, Lindsey Van Es, Vargas and Kamryn Ebel. Finishing sixth were the distance medley of Thalia Rodriguez, Jenna Hengeveld, Vogt and Brooklyn Erickson and the shuttle hurdle with Trinity Tovar, Rodriguez, Jamie Diaz, Hengeveld.

Hawk boys compete but struggle to score at War Eagle Conference Meet

It was a night of competition, improvement and of establishing some new personal bests for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys track and field team as they journeyed to Hawarden May 5 to take part in the War Eagle Conference Meet hosted by West Sioux.
HMS scored only one point, courtesy of the sixth-place finish by the distance medley relay. The members of that relay team were Jackson Vogt, Isaac Schierholz, Karter Zimmer and Ryan Grotluschen. Gehlen Catholic was crowned WEC champs after totaling 131 points to win the meet.
“Once again the boys did a great job of going out and competing,” noted Hawk head coach Korey Ebel. “We had a great night to go out and compete, it was the nicest weather we’ve had all year. Although we didn’t finish where we would like in the standings, we continue to get better and improve with every meet. We ran some new personal bests which was great to see.”
Finishing just out the points were three seventh-place relays: the 4×400 of Ryan Grotluschen, Zimmer, Blaine Finster and Alex Billings, the 4×800 with Simone Dellavedova, Damian Dodge, Joe Buhrmann and Hayden Dolphin and the sprint medley of Vogt, Caden Douma, Schierholz and Ryan Grotluschen.
