Tourney loss to Akron-Westfield ends Hawks’ season

The baseball season came to a close for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn July 5 at Akron as the Hawks lost 11-1 to host Akron-Westfield in six innings. The loss in the Class 1A District 2 opening round game gave HMS a final season record of 0-18.
The contest got started late due to earlier weather delays of over an hour and a half. The game was also interrupted briefly due to heavy rain.
It was a 3-1 contest after the Hawks scored a run in the top of the fourth inning. Lawton Schiphoff and Jack Mastbergen each drew a walk. Hunter Daggett then hit a ball that the Westerners attempted to turn ito a double play. They recorded the out at second but when the throw to first was errant Schiphoff was able to come home from third to score.
Daggett’s first-inning single was the only hit for HMS. Mastbergen drew a second walk and Daggett was also the recipient of a walk.
Starting pitcher Mastbergen walked five batters in 1-1/3 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits. Grant Kunzman moved from third base to the pitcher’s mound to work 2-1/3 innings which included five earned runs on four hits. He struck out a batter and walked a batter. Caden Douma came in from center field to pitch the final 2-1/3 innings. He yielded three earned runs on four hits. Douma recorded one strikeout and one hit batter. The run that ended the game scored on a balk. The Hawks committed just one error.
This was the final game for seniors Mastbergen and Blake Meendering.
