Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got to see some different faces across the net as they journeyed east to Graettinger September 21 for the GTRA Volleyball Tourney.
The Hawks lost their opening match to Emmetsburg 21-13 and 21-15. Pocahontas Area also got the better of HMS in two, winning 21-14 and 21-16. The Hawks wrapped up the day against the host Titans. HMS blasted GTRA 21-5 in the first set but the Titans came back to take set two 23-21. The Hawks made sure they did not go winless at the tourney by beating GTRA 15-9 in set three to take the match 2-1 and get to 4-8 on the season.
In the opener against the E-Hawks, HMS recorded six total blocks with Douma having two assists and Eva Stammer, Eliza Tewes, Kylee Schiphoff and Frankie Mohni one apiece. Douma had five kills and Schiphoff four with Mohni accounting for all of the team’s 10 set assists. Tewes was 5-of-5 serving with an ace. Moriah Otto led the team with four digs.
Lindsey Van Es came up with nine digs in the match with Pocahontas Area. Otto and Douma each had three kills and Mohni assisted on seven kills. Otto served 5-of-5 and Douma and Mohni assisted on a block.
HMS produced 20 kills in the three-setter with the Titans. Leading the way were Otto with six kills and Douma and Schiphoff with five apiece. Facilitating the attack was Mohni with 11 set assists. She also dug up 12 GTRA attacks. Schiphoff was on the attack from the service line, going 19-of-20 with six aces. Otto and Douma combined for a block.
