HMS comeback falls short as St. Mary’s wins in five

In a see-saw match that went the distance, Remsen St. Mary’s won the deciding fifth set to defeat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 3-2 September 30 at Hartley. With the loss, HMS dipped to 2-5 in the War Eagle Conference and to 5-12 overall.
HMS took the first set 25-20 but St. Mary’s responded by winning the next two by scores of 25-13 and 25-15. With their backs to the wall, the home team fought back to tie the match, capturing the fourth set 25-22. HMS fell behind 0-4 in set five. The team battled back to draw close but never could take a lead in the set won 15-12 by St. Mary’s.
Abby Douma pounded down 20 kills with a .357 kill efficiency. Kylee Schiphoff added 12 kills and Moriah Otto seven. Frankie Mohni assisted on 40 of the team’s 44 kills.
Douma was also a presence on defense with four solo blocks and one assist. Schiphoff assisted on three blocks to go along with her one solo block. The 109 HMS digs included 29 from Lindsey Van Es, 19 from Mohni and 17 from Eliza Tewes.
HMS served at 90 percent. Tewes was 16-of-16 and Addy Sheeler 7-of-7.
