In an early season show of strength, the Pioneer wrestling boys captured the team title at their own Okoboji/HMS Invitational held December 7 at Milford. The home team scored 181 points to edge out Fulda-Murray County Central from Minnesota which finished with a 177.5 total.
HMS 165-pound wrestler James Gellerman was one of three Okoboji/HMS grapplers to win his weight class. The others were Chase Franklin at 120 pounds and Tyce Hansen at 132.
Two HMS wrestlers in the lower weight classes finished fourth. The pair were 113-pounder Dallas Greer and 120-pounder Nathan Stofferan.
Gellerman executed pins against Josh Harmon of North Union in 31 seconds and Sioux Central’s Gavin Casey in 1:53. The 1st Place Match against Quintin Lewis of Fulda-MCC went into overtime with Gellerman winning 6-3 in sudden victory – 1.
Stofferan began his meet by taking on Franklin and he had to forfeit to his Okoboji/HMS teammate due to injury. Stofferan came back in the consolation semis to pin West Sioux’s Aiden DeBoom in 1:46. The 3rd Place Match saw Stofferan drop a 13-9 decision to Jackson Van Der Sloot of Sibley-Ocheyedan.
Greer lost his opening match by fall to Aaron Schurman of West Sioux in 2:30. He received byes into the consolation semis where he was pinned by Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Goivanni Garcia in :23. Greer met Schurman again in the 3rd Place Match and again it was the West Sioux grappler winning by fall, this time in 48 seconds.
