Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn just missed crowning three individual champions in boys competition as the Hawks hosted the War Eagle Conference Meet May 3 at Hartley. Three HMS athletes finished second in their events. The runners-up were Noah Adams in the long jump, Connor Dodd in the 100 meter dash and Kooper Ebel in the 400 meter dash.
Those efforts helped the Hawks reach 51 points and a fifth-place finish in the 11-team field. The race for the top spot was heated. Unity Christian emerged as the champion with 114 points. Gehlen Catholic was second with 110 points and West Sioux third with 108.
Dodd finished fourth in the 200 meters, a placing equaled by Ethan Diehm in the long jump. Four relays also wound up in fourth place: the 4×100 of Adams, Ebel, Dawson Schiphoff and Dodd, the 4×200 of Adams, Ryan Borden, Schiphoff and Dodd, the 4×800 of Diehm, Kamradt, Brenton Thomas and Bryce Dodge and the sprint medley of Adams, Schiphoff, Borden and Ebel.
Schiphoff and Ebel placed sixth in the 100 meters and 200 meters, respectively. Another sixth-place finish was turned in by the 4×400 relay team of Borden, Kamradt, Diehm and JP Mutombo. Brenton Thomas was seventh in the 400 meter hurdles.
